July 7th. Birthday poem by O

I turned 20 today.

What she best remembers
Is the cadent rhymes
Of her Father’s voice
And his hard hand
Stroking her cheeks fondly,
And minutes stealing out from the night,
Tiptoeing away in sync with her mother’s soft steps
As she placed the celebratory cake
On the big living room table

And her father whispering to her in his calming baritone
“What is your biggest birthday wish”
And she would chuckle
And let her mouth fill up
With childish baubles

But
She would say, now:
Time. I want time.

Happy birthday H.
