The Unborn Child

Before birth,
I felt nothing. I knew nothing,
I was produced,
in a small pocket of flesh
that was part of me.
I lived and yet
was not born.
I was dormant
yet unawakened.
I was safe inside my pocket of flesh.
I knew nothing,
I felt nothing
and yet
I was on the threshold
of something,
I didn’t understand
and slowly yet suddenly
I was born into the light.
Yet the light
Came through shut eyes
And I was afraid.
